However, disbanding committed teams and redeploying resources is not easily done. Team members doing the work feel that we are giving up on something important. How do we lead through these changes and help people refocus their energy on what comes next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your team has devoted their time, attention, and energy to the success of a project. Ending that work abruptly may lead them to question whether they\u2019ve failed, whether their work is still valued, and perhaps whether they will remain key contributors or be sidelined. So stopping a project isn\u2019t just a matter of wrapping up tasks. Managers must also address the impact on \ufeffmorale. I suggest taking the following steps\ufeff:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Reframe and explain.<\/strong> It\u2019s important to communicate how the project served its purpose.  The words leaders choose matter here. Instead of saying that a project \u201cfailed\u201d or \u201cwasn\u2019t worth the time,\u201d emphasize that every initiative has a life cycle, and be transparent about why this one is being wound down.<\/p>\n<p>Highlight what was learned or gained: A cross-functional project may have strengthened ties across the company, for example. Connect the lessons and progress from the completed project to future priorities. By focusing\ufeff on knowledge gained or relationships built, you help your team see that their commitment brought the company to where it is today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Redirect and reassign.<\/strong> Once the rationale for ending an initiative is clear, communicating what\u2019s next, with empathy and clarity, must follow. Before stopping a project, have a plan for reassigning the team members working on it to equally meaningful roles. When a project ends, employees will naturally wonder where they fit in. Part of your role as a leader is to assure them that they can continue to make significant contributions. Identify where their superpowers, skills, and capabilities will be valuable, and discuss how they can be redirected toward a new initiative. Turning to the future makes it easier to let go of the past.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the period, more than a century ago, when automobiles began to replace horse-drawn carriages.
