\u2060Britain\u2019s Observer newspaper said \u2060UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was expected to resign on Monday and set out a timetable for his departure, though a government source \u200csaid the leader remained focused on getting on with the job of governing.<\/p>\n
The threat to Starmer\u2019s position, which has been building for months, increased sharply on Friday when his rival Andy Burnham won a \u2060seat in parliament that would allow him to launch a \u200cformal leadership challenge.<\/p>\n
The Observer report said Starmer was discussing the matter with his wife \u200cat his Chequers country residence before making a final \u2060decision, \u2060but that senior Labour figures expected a clear statement on his future \u200cas early as Monday.<\/p>\n
However, a government source said Starmer remained focused on \u200chis \u200cjob and pointed to previous statements he had \u200cmade to that effect.<\/p>\n
The British leader said on Friday \u2060he would fight any challenge to his position and urged \u2060Labour not to tear itself apart with infighting.<\/p>\n
More than 100 elected lawmakers in his party \u2013 roughly \u200ca quarter of \u200call Labour representatives in the House of Commons \u2013 have publicly said they want Starmer to quit or set out a timetable for his exit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
