Beijing and Manila have exchanged fresh accusations over a clash in the South China Sea<\/span><\/a>, just as China\u2019s top diplomat is due to attend the Asean foreign ministers\u2019 meeting in the Philippines.<\/div>\n
On social media late on Monday, the China Coast Guard said that at around 9am that morning as a small Chinese coastguard vessel was patrolling near Second Thomas Shoal<\/span><\/a>, two rubber dinghies were launched \u201cillegally\u201d from the Philippine Navy\u2019s BRP Sierra Madre, a vessel grounded<\/span><\/a> on the shoal by Manila about 27 years ago.<\/div>\n

The Philippine vessels \u201cignored our repeated and explicit warnings, rapidly approached in a dangerous manner and rammed the Chinese patrol vessel from the front\u201d, the China Coast Guard said.<\/p>\n

During the incident, Philippine personnel \u201cfirst used tools such as oars and long sticks to maliciously attack Chinese law enforcement officers\u201d, the Chinese agency said.<\/p>\n

The Chinese side \u201ctook measures in accordance with laws and regulations \u2013 including issuing verbal warnings, manoeuvring to avoid the vessel, and implementing reciprocal countermeasures \u2013 to stabilise the situation on the ground, exercising the utmost rationality and restraint\u201d.<\/p>\n

It accused the Philippine side of \u201cdistorting the facts and falsely incriminating China\u201d following the incident, and demanded that the Philippines \u201cimmediately cease its infringements, provocations and false propaganda\u201d.<\/p>\n

The China Coast Guard would \u201ccontinue to carry out law enforcement activities to safeguard its rights\u201d in the South China Sea and would \u201cresolutely uphold the country\u2019s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
