Eyder Peralta de NPR informa desde la ciudad portuaria de La Guaira.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"anuncio\">\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-label=\"Transcripci\u00f3n\">\n    <b class=\"icn-story-transcript-wrap\"><br \/>\n        <b class=\"icn-story-transcript\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/b><\/p>\n<p>DON GONYEA, PRESENTADOR: <\/p>\n<p> Comenzamos el programa de hoy en el puerto venezolano de La Guaira, en la costa caribe\u00f1a, que ahora est\u00e1 en el centro de uno de los peores desastres naturales del pa\u00eds. La ciudad soport\u00f3 la peor parte de los brutales terremotos dobles del mi\u00e9rcoles, que mataron a casi 1.500 personas en la capital y \u00e1reas circundantes del norte de Venezuela. Miles a\u00fan no han sido localizados. Los equipos de rescate y voluntarios contin\u00faan buscando entre los escombros, pero las esperanzas de encontrar m\u00e1s sobrevivientes se desvanecen a medida que pasa el tiempo. Eyder Peralta de NPR est\u00e1 all\u00ed en La Guaira. Eyder, has pasado el d\u00eda viajando a lo largo de esta costa destruida. \u00bfQu\u00e9 has visto?<\/p>\n<p>EYDER PERALTA, POR L\u00cdNEA: Quiero decir, es una devastaci\u00f3n total, Don. Anoche estuvimos aqu\u00ed hasta tarde, hasta la puesta del sol. Y est\u00e1bamos frente a un edificio, y hab\u00eda una carrera loca para tratar de encontrar personas que hac\u00edan ruido bajo los escombros. Y realmente, era un trabajo improvisado. Ataban pedazos de concreto a los autos y solo intentaban moverlos con los autos. Y luego, de vez en cuando, le dec\u00edan a todos que se callaran. Las motocicletas apagaban sus motores, y todos se quedaban en silencio. Y los rescatistas gritaban: si est\u00e1s vivo, por favor haz algo de ruido.<\/p>\n<p>Las personas dentro hab\u00edan estado gritando durante d\u00edas, pero anoche, todo lo que los rescatistas segu\u00edan escuchando eran sonidos de susurros. Les dijeron: si est\u00e1s vivo, usa dos rocas y golp\u00e9alas juntas para que podamos o\u00edrte. La buena noticia es que un funcionario nos dijo que del edificio frente al que estoy ahora (donde tambi\u00e9n estuvimos anoche) rescataron a una persona viva esta ma\u00f1ana.<\/p>\n<p>GONYEA: Hablamos contigo hace 24 horas en La Guaira, y me sorprende. Hab\u00eda tanto ruido de fondo cuando habl\u00e1bamos. Pod\u00eda escuchar retroexcavadoras, motocicletas por todas partes. Hoy est\u00e1 mucho m\u00e1s tranquilo.<\/p>\n<p>PERALTA: Lo est\u00e1, y hay una raz\u00f3n para eso. B\u00e1sicamente, necesitan escuchar si alguien sigue vivo. As\u00ed que lo que han dicho (me escuchar\u00e1s susurrar aqu\u00ed) lo que han dicho a las motocicletas es que tienen que apagar sus motores cuando pasen por cualquier edificio derrumbado. Y as\u00ed los motociclistas apagan sus motores. Caminan. Y te dicen que te calles y que ni siquiera te muevas porque los pasos hacen ruido, y est\u00e1n tratando desesperadamente de averiguar si alguien sigue en esos edificios. Y por eso est\u00e1 tan tranquilo hoy.<\/p>\n<p>GONYEA: Entonces, \u00bfcu\u00e1l es el desaf\u00edo ahora para los equipos de rescate y, supongo, los equipos de recuperaci\u00f3n en las \u00e1reas m\u00e1s afectadas?<\/p>\n<p>PERALTA: Hay algunas partes que est\u00e1n totalmente bien, y luego hay algunas partes que est\u00e1n completamente devastadas. Y es un desastre masivo. Hay mucha ayuda, pero simplemente no es suficiente. Hoy est\u00e1bamos frente a un edificio de 12 pisos, y no hab\u00eda nadie. No hab\u00eda ning\u00fan rescatista oficial. Solo estaban las familias de las personas que viv\u00edan en ese edificio, cavando entre los escombros, y solo con sus manos.<\/p>\n<p>GONYEA: \u00bfY qu\u00e9 te dice la gente tanto sobre la respuesta oficial como sobre la magnitud del da\u00f1o que enfrentan?<\/p>\n<p>PERALTA: Creo que entienden que esto es tan masivo que su gobierno no puede manejarlo adecuadamente. Sabes, una escena interesante: hoy est\u00e1bamos en un edificio de apartamentos, y la gente entraba a edificios de apartamentos medio destruidos para tratar de rescatar sus cosas porque dec\u00edan que no conf\u00edan en que el gobierno los respalde, y por lo tanto las van a necesitar. Habl\u00e9 con una mujer, Jaymarie Blanco (ph), quien me dijo que hab\u00eda perdido su hogar en un deslizamiento de tierra en 1999. Dijo que hab\u00eda construido este apartamento con tanto amor, y estaba sacando su sof\u00e1 de su apartamento, y se derrumb\u00f3.
