In just two months, Yale graduate Edward Kuperman went from being praised by Chinese state media to being bombarded with accusations that he was a spy.<\/p>\n

It began with a June 18 article from state news agency Xinhua<\/span><\/a>, in which he was described as an eager 24-year-old sinophile who made the unconventional choice of spurning China\u2019s eastern metropolises and choosing to live in Dunhuang<\/span><\/a>, in the country\u2019s northwestern Gansu province, an oasis town on the ancient Silk Road.<\/div>\n

His interest in China started with a Chinese language class in junior high, as well as books and films about China, Xinhua said. At 17, he was an exchange student in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. After returning to the US, his parents hired a Chinese tutor for him, the article said.<\/p>\n

Kuperman, who also goes by the Chinese name Gu Aihua \u2013 \u201cLoving China\u201d \u2013 started his first job as an intern live-streamer at the Dunhuang Culture International Communication Centre (DCICC) in April, the article said, adding that he believed the city was a \u201cunique entryway to observing China, understanding China and telling China\u2019s stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his life in Dunhuang, which for centuries was a stop along the Silk Road, Xinhua\u2019s article is typically rosy. One anecdote describes how he spent 3 hours helping a Dutch tourist find their lost backpack. \u201cKuperman told the relieved tourist, \u2018In China, nothing gets lost.\u2019 The tourist nodded in agreement,\u201d the article reads.<\/p>\n

The DCICC\u2019s Instagram account featured Kuperman in three videos in May and June, interviewing participants at the Third World Conference of Sinologists and introducing the city\u2019s famous Crescent Lake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
