Les participants aux entretiens ont \u00e9galement examin\u00e9 le r\u00e9cit du cas tel qu'il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par les chercheurs et ont fourni des informations compl\u00e9mentaires.<\/li>\n<li>Les auteurs ont compl\u00e9t\u00e9 les entretiens par des informations provenant de documents fournis par Caterpillar et de sources accessibles au public.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<div class=\"article-summary\"><strong class=\"article-summary__strong\">R\u00e9sum\u00e9 : <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Un projet de transformation des donn\u00e9es pluriannuel chez Caterpillar qui a rendu l'entreprise pr\u00eate pour l'IA constitue un cas exemplaire de ce qu'implique l'engagement des dirigeants envers un tel projet technologique. Les PDG doivent aller au-del\u00e0 de la communication d'un soutien abstrait, en fixant un objectif commercial strat\u00e9gique tangible que la transformation soutiendra ; en donnant aux \u00e9quipes des horizons temporels r\u00e9alistes et des ressources ad\u00e9quates ; et en attribuant des r\u00f4les significatifs et instrumentaux aux membres de l'\u00e9quipe de direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"smr-leadin\">Le PDG de Caterpillar avait un probl\u00e8me.<\/span> Jim Umpleby avait pris la direction g\u00e9n\u00e9rale en 2017 avec la vision d'atteindre une croissance plus rentable en vendant davantage de services et de pi\u00e8ces aux clients d'\u00e9quipements lourds de l'entreprise. Parce que l'offre de services d'information de gestion de flotte en temps r\u00e9el et la vente de pi\u00e8ces en ligne d\u00e9pendraient des technologies num\u00e9riques, il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une nouvelle division appel\u00e9e Cat Digital. Mais \ufeffle responsable de la division a rapidement apport\u00e9 une mauvaise nouvelle \u00e0 Umpleby : l'entreprise ne connaissait pas suffisamment ses clients pour atteindre son objectif. Les donn\u00e9es clients \u00e9taient cloisonn\u00e9es, fragment\u00e9es et, dans le cas des \u00e9quipements d'occasion, souvent totalement absentes.<\/p>\n<p>Ce probl\u00e8me est partag\u00e9 par d'innombrables dirigeants qui voient comment le num\u00e9rique peut permettre une strat\u00e9gie de croissance mais sont entrav\u00e9s par un h\u00e9ritage d'actifs de donn\u00e9es fragment\u00e9s, incomplets et incoh\u00e9rents. On leur dit souvent que mettre de l'ordre dans leurs donn\u00e9es est une condition pr\u00e9alable pour tirer pleinement parti de nouveaux outils comme l'intelligence artificielle, mais ils consid\u00e8rent trop souvent la transformation des donn\u00e9es comme un projet de modernisation informatique. Ils d\u00e9l\u00e8guent le travail aux responsables informatiques et \u00e9valuent le succ\u00e8s en fonction du co\u00fbt, de la rapidit\u00e9 et de l'adoption d'outils. Mais lorsque les donn\u00e9es sont trait\u00e9es comme une infrastructure informatique plut\u00f4t que comme un actif d'entreprise, leur impact est limit\u00e9, comme on peut s'y attendre. Les entreprises qui tirent une r\u00e9elle valeur de leurs donn\u00e9es impliquent activement l'\u00e9quipe de direction dans la transformation des donn\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Chez Caterpillar, Umpleby et son \u00e9quipe ont fait plus que simplement approuver la proposition d'Ogi Redzic, directeur num\u00e9rique de Cat Digital, de construire une nouvelle plateforme de donn\u00e9es num\u00e9riques d'entreprise. En 2019, ils ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 un engagement \u00e0 long terme en accordant \u00e0 l'\u00e9quipe de Redzic un d\u00e9lai g\u00e9n\u00e9reux de trois ans pour construire la plateforme, surnomm\u00e9e Helios, qui permettrait \u00e0 l'entreprise, \u00e0 ses clients et \u00e0 ses concessionnaires de voir des informations de flotte coh\u00e9rentes et compl\u00e8tes sur toutes les applications et interactions.
