French court frees ex-president Sarkozy from jail pending appeal of Libya funding conviction

A Paris court granted former French president Nicolas Sarkozy early release from jail on Monday, pending an appeal, just weeks after he started a five-year sentence for conspiring to raise campaign funds from Libya. The former conservative president, 70, was jailed on October 21 after a court found him guilty in September of criminal conspiracy over efforts by close aides to procure funds for his 2007 presidential bid from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. He was acquitted of all other charges, including corruption and receiving illegal campaign financing. As Brazil prepares to host COP30, residents of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas are mobilizing to make sure the voices of the world’s informal settlements aren’t left out of global climate talks. SACHA PFEIFFER, HOST: The 2025 United Nations Climate Conference, known as COP30, opens tomorrow in Belem, Brazil. Ahead of the official meetings, community members from Rio’s favelas, its lowest-income neighborhoods, have been mobilizing. The director general of Britain’s BBC, Tim Davie, and the CEO of news, Deborah Turness, have resigned following criticism over bias at the corporation, including in the way it edited a speech by US President Donald Trump. Jeremy Renner denies sending lewd photos to director Yi Zhou, making ICE threat

Actor Jeremy Renner has denied a series of allegations raised by filmmaker Yi Zhou, including that he sent her unsolicited sexual messages and threatened to call US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the Chinese writer-director. “The allegations are totally inaccurate and untrue,” a representative for Renner told People magazine.
