It also feels uncomfortable for people who are accustomed to traditional top-down dynamics, but it\u2019s a crucial, often-skipped step in building real autonomy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have employees create work plans.<\/strong> They will surprise you with what they bring to the table.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make \u201cno\u201d an acceptable answer.<\/strong> Help your team members get comfortable with pushing back and having tough discussions about capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eliminate territorial thinking.<\/strong> Help your team reorient around shared goals rather than individual wins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The shift wasn\u2019t easy, and it\u2019s one that Dreyer and her team are still refining. But by the end of the first year, staff members had flipped from spending 80% of their time on overhead and planning to spending 80% on actual execution.
