Boards Are Falling Short on Cybersecurity

At this point, most boards are convinced of the necessity for cybersecurity investments. They get that a serious cyber event is a costly, brand-damaging situation that can devastate operations, dismantle consumer confidence, and even conjure up existential concerns. However, as boards become more focused on cybersecurity, are they paradoxically getting worse at governing it? Year-over-year the cybersecurity situation keeps getting worse. For example, the 2024 FBI crime report, published last spring, revealed that cybercrime losses increased 33% compared to the previous year. #Boards #Falling #Short #Cybersecurity

Lessons From Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

Matt Harrison Clough Summary: As AI reshapes the job market, many people will need to reinvent their professional identities. Where can they find comfort and guidance? A classic children’s book from 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, meets the current moment well. Its messages about technology pushback, forms of value, and purpose, informed by research on the future of work and the wisdom of storybook author Virginia Lee Burton, has lessons for workers facing disruption from artificial intelligence. As organizations like Amazon, PwC, and Microsoft have announced AI-fueled layoffs, it’s no surprise that half of Americans have expressed concern about AI’s larger potential impact on their jobs. Of course, […]

DG cites MPIA as "practical, confidence-building bridge" pending dispute reform deal

The Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA) is serving as a practical, confidence building bridge for WTO members committed to a fully functioning dispute settlement system pending an agreement on dispute settlement reform, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said on 28 March. She made her remarks at a meeting of parties to the MPIA on the sidelines of the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14). #cites #MPIA #quotpractical #confidencebuilding #bridgequot #pending #dispute #reform #deal

Don’t Let AI Destroy the Skills That Make Your Company Competitive

Artificial intelligence is often sold to executives as a force multiplier, boosting the performance of employees. However, there’s a major, but much less highlighted, drawback: AI can kill the individual DNA of an organization by cleaving to the generic standard, undermining the organizations it seeks to streamline. In that scenario organizations become more automated, yet less adaptive; more data-driven, yet less wise; more efficient, yet less legitimate in the eyes of employees and customers. #Dont #Destroy #Skills #Company #Competitive

Hong Kong’s CLP Power to give out HK$100 shopping coupons to 600,000 customers

Hong Kong’s CLP Power will distribute HK$100 (US$13) consumption coupons to about 600,000 eligible customers, including elderly people receiving concessionary tariffs, using HK$60 million from the company’s Community Energy Saving Fund. The initiative follows the power company’s earlier announcement that it would raise its fuel cost adjustment (FCA) charge starting this month, citing a discrepancy between forecast and actual fuel prices amid the United States-Israel war against Iran, which has driven up wholesale gas and power prices. “Hong Kong’s economy is recovering, but with shifts in consumer behaviour, the retail and catering sectors are still facing operational pressure,” Quince Chong Wai-yan, the energy firm’s chief corporate development officer, said on […]

When Executive Presence Backfires

Imagine a senior leadership team gathered to debate a key strategic initiative. Around the table, you’re probably picturing confident, decisive voices—people who project polish, command attention, and always seem to have the answers. After all, confidence and decisiveness are hallmark traits of executive presence, a quality long sought by boards, taught at top business schools, and used at performance review time as a catch-all descriptor to either promote or shelve C-suite hopefuls. #Executive #Presence #Backfires
