Learn to Disagree More Effectively

ALISON BEARD: I’m Alison Beard. ADI IGNATIUS: And I’m Adi Ignatius, and this is the HBR IdeaCast. ALISON BEARD: Adi, how do you like to handle disagreement at work? ADI IGNATIUS: I don’t think I handle it very well. I’m very conflict avoidant. So I do an end run around disagreement and try to resolve the issue in some other way. ALISON BEARD: That’s the opposite of me. I think that I’m sort of – it’s not that I welcome disagreement, but I don’t mind it. And so if I have an opinion, even if I know it might ruffle some feathers, I express it. I sometimes worry it’s going […]

Hong Kong’s ICAC charges 5 over alleged building renovation bribery scheme

Hong Kong’s anti-corruption watchdog has charged five people over alleged bribes – including casino chips and red packets – offered to flat owners and owner corporation members during large-scale renovation projects, worth about HK$90 million (US$11.5 million), at three housing estates. The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on Wednesday disclosed details of its crackdown on a crime syndicate accused of “manipulating tendering exercises” for building maintenance projects through bribery and bid-rigging. The arrests followed a joint operation with the Competition Commission, codenamed “Shotgun”. The charges followed a separate operation into renovation projects that led to the arrest of 22 people in February. The ICAC raided companies linked to dubious renovation […]

How to Convince Others to Trust Your Instincts

Your team is finalizing a new strategy during a meeting. The recommendations seem logical on the surface and everyone is nodding along, ready to execute. Yet you feel hesitant. Something is nagging at you. You can’t pinpoint a specific data point that’s incorrect, but the analysis feels off. If you speak up and say “I just have a hunch this won’t work,” you risk coming off as a blocker. But if you stay silent, a potentially flawed plan moves forward.  #Convince #Trust #Instincts

Leaders Underestimate the Value of Employee Joy

Company leaders have long claimed that people are their greatest asset. Yet many still design work as if employees were just one of many operational inputs, leaving their greatest assets feeling dissatisfied and unmotivated. Companies have become masters at understanding their customers. They map customer journeys, study their behaviors, and use predictive analytics to anticipate their needs with astonishing precision. But when it comes to understanding their employees—the very people who create those customer experiences—most organizations still rely on intuition, surface-level data, or generic, infrequent surveys. #Leaders #Underestimate #Employee #Joy

U.S. Department of Labor’s Taylor Stockton

In this episode of the Me, Myself, and AI podcast, host Sam Ransbotham speaks with Taylor Stockton, chief innovation officer at the U.S. Department of Labor, about how artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce. Taylor emphasizes that AI is having an economywide impact, transforming tasks within nearly every job rather than affecting only certain industries or specific roles. He stresses the importance of helping workers and businesses adapt. He also argues that AI literacy is becoming a foundational skill and should be prioritized alongside soft skills like relationship building, which will remain essential for differentiation in an AI-driven economy. Taylor calls for shifting the public narrative from fear to optimism, […]

Does climate change accelerate EV battery ageing? Not so fast, researchers say

As electric vehicle (EV) use surges globally, scientists have raised concerns about the performance of such batteries in high temperatures, including the possible impact of climate change on their usable lifespan. But a study published this month by researchers in China and the US has found that major advances in EV battery technologies will mitigate the impact of future warming. They studied the impact by creating an advanced model that captures future climate change and EV battery degradation for 300 cities around the world. “Our study demonstrates that technological advancements in battery technology have largely offset future adverse effects of climate warming on battery lifespans,” the team said in a […]
